Have you ever felt left out of decisions that shape your everyday life? At Difference North East, we’re all about changing that. That’s why we recently ran an “On the Table” event for the Community Foundation’s Vital Signs report. This event brought disabled people together to share their experiences and talk about ways to make life fairer and more accessible. Here’s what we learned—and why you should join us to make your voice heard.
Public Transport: A System That Isn’t Working for Us
Imagine relying on public transport but never knowing if it will work for you. For many disabled people, this is a daily reality. Broken lifts, inaccessible buses, and lack of clear travel information make getting around frustrating and often impossible. These barriers don’t just waste time—they also impact jobs, health, and quality of life.
One wheelchair user shared a story about being stuck at a Metro station for hours because the trains were cancelled and no accessible alternatives were available. Stories like this highlight the urgent need for better systems, like real-time travel updates and universally accessible designs.
Health and Wellness: Spaces That Leave Us Out
Disabled people told us that most gyms and health initiatives aren’t designed with them in mind. From inaccessible equipment to disablist assumptions, these spaces can feel intimidating or outright exclusionary. Some participants even said they’ve been made to feel ashamed of their disabilities when trying to stay healthy.
We need more inclusive wellness programmes that consider everyone’s unique needs—so disabled people can thrive without stigma.
Culture and Community: Fighting Isolation
Smaller community groups like Alphabetti Theatre and Star and Shadow Cinema are leading the way in providing accessible spaces. But many disabled people don’t know these opportunities exist because of poor communication and outreach. Bigger organisations, which often have more funding, are less likely to prioritise accessibility.
Investing in grassroots organisations and making sure information reaches everyone can help tackle isolation and build stronger, more inclusive communities.
Climate Action: Excluded From the Conversation
Disabled people want to be part of climate solutions, but many feel left out or even shamed. Relying on taxis or single-use plastics can make people feel judged—even when these things are essential to their independence. Climate strategies must include disabled voices and recognise these needs as non-negotiable.
Why This Event Matters
This event wasn’t just about talking—it was about listening. By sharing these challenges with the Community Foundation, we’re pushing for real changes that can improve everyday life for disabled people in the North East. Events like these are just one of the ways Difference North East fights for inclusion and equality.
But we can’t do it alone.
