Finding Power in Disability History: Did You Know

  • That in 1880, sign language was banned in education around the world?
  • That in 1907, enforced sterilisation for “confirmed idiots” was enacted in America, and quickly spread to other countries?
  • That in the 1920s, unions of disabled war veterans were formed, and blind workers marched on London against poor pay and conditions?
  • That in 1992, disabled people stopped a charity telethon?
  • That 2025 marks 30 years since the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) was passed in 1995?
