Finding Power in Disability History: Join us this International Day of Disabled People for a powerful and engaging talk that connects the past, present, and future of disability rights.

Finding Power in Disability History: Did You Know

  • That in 1880, sign language was banned in education around the world?
  • That in 1907, enforced sterilisation for “confirmed idiots” was enacted in America, and quickly spread to other countries?
  • That in the 1920s, unions of disabled war veterans were formed, and blind workers marched on London against poor pay and conditions?
  • That in 1992, disabled people stopped a charity telethon?
  • That 2025 marks 30 years since the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) was passed in 1995?

About the Speaker

Claire Andrews from Difference North East will take us on a journey through disability history, showing how the stories of the past shape the policies of today, and what the future could look like.

Claire has a degree in Disability Studies and has worked for charities across Teesside for the last 20 years. A proud disabled woman, she describes herself as wanting to make a “small difference in our corner of the world.”
