Building Inclusive Workplaces
What disabled people told us about looking for work, staying in work and making employment more accessible
We have been working with disabled people across the North East to explore their experiences of looking for work, staying in work, and accessing support. People told us about the barriers they faced and what would make employment more accessible.
The resources below bring together what we learned.

This report explores disabled people’s experiences of work-related systems.
It looks at issues including trust, risk, flexibility, workplace culture, independent support and what makes work feel safe and sustainable.
Resources
Films
Working with ITV Signpost, Skills for People and New Hope North East, we produced three short films exploring disabled people’s experiences of work.
Personas
We spoke to disabled people about their experiences of work and used what we learned to create six personas.
Each persona represents a different set of barriers that people may experience when looking for work, starting work or staying in work.
They are designed to help employers think about how recruitment processes, workplace practices and organisational culture can create barriers, and what they can do to remove them.

Good Practice in Inclusive Employment
Alongside identifying barriers, disabled people and employers also shared examples of what helps.
This report brings together examples of inclusive employment and explores what disabled people’s experiences can tell us about good practice.
