Claiming the Normal: About the Artist

Kev Howard is a North East-based photographer whose work explores societal narratives around disability, body image, and social justice. At times, his practice also reflects on the impact of government policies on marginalised groups. Howard works across documentary photography and studio-based still life, creating images that are both thought-provoking and honest.

Howards work reflects 21st Century issues through societal observation, can be challenging, but also reflects an honesty in his captures which are thought provoking, and are a reflection of what is happening in front of his lens. His street based portraits capture the essence of the individual in their urban surroundings, a glimpse of their persona projected for the camera. There is mutual respect built between the sitter and photographer as they create the image together. His work documenting protest captures the passion of the protestor, the comradery of the social shared experience and constant ebb and flow of emotion, from quiet reflection, to explosive reaction.

Claiming the Normal

During Winter 2024/25, Difference North East began updating its website and faced a familiar problem: the lack of authentic representation of disabled people in stock photography. The images that existed often reinforced harmful stereotypes—portraying disabled people as either inspirational figures ‘overcoming’ their impairments or as objects of pity. There were very few images showing disabled people simply living their lives.

In response, Difference North East partnered with Kev Howard to create Claiming the Normal, a photography project celebrating the everyday lives of disabled people. The exhibition features striking portraits of disabled people at work, shopping, enjoying hobbies, and engaging in ordinary activities. By showing real moments rather than clichés, the project challenges public perceptions and reclaims space for authentic representation.

The project is ongoing, and Difference North East acknowledges that the images currently featured are not yet fully representative of the diversity of disabled people in the UK. The disability rights movement, like many sectors, has often been too white and too middle-class, and opening up conversations about inclusion is vital. Disabled people who do not see themselves reflected in the project are encouraged to get involved by emailing hello@differencenortheast.org.uk.
