The Disabled Climate Action Forum (DCAF) met at 6:00pm on 18 September 2025, discussing how disabled people can meaningfully take part in climate action activities across the North East.
How to Improve Participation
Disabled people are often excluded because of avoidable barriers. These can be reduced by:
- Choosing genuinely accessible venues
- Providing timely, clear and accessible information
- Ensuring environmental groups receive disability equality training
- Offering mentorship and peer support to new participants
Our Impairments Do Not Exclude Us
Impairments may shape how people participate, but they should not exclude anyone. Climate action involves many skills, including:
- Online research or admin
- Telephone outreach
- Graphic and image design
- Strategy, planning and logistics
Developing a Demonstration Project
Members were enthusiastic about developing a disabled-led demonstration project where people can:
- Compost and grow food
- Plant trees and protect habitats
- Promote biodiversity and conservation
- Enjoy accessible outdoor spaces
Two locations were suggested — one in Teesside and one in Tyneside — improving geographic access. There are currently no disabled-led accessible climate action sites in the region.
Goal: Equal opportunities for disabled people to contribute to climate action meaningfully and accessibly.
