Background

South Tyneside Council Housing Service, based in South Shields, manages and administers approximately 16,000 properties. With a workforce of over 600 staff across a range of roles, they provide vital housing services to the local community.

The organisation sought to improve its approach to equality, diversity, and inclusion by providing disability equality, awareness, and etiquette training to all staff. Their goal was to create a more inclusive workplace and enhance the services they provide to disabled residents.

How We Helped

Over a 12-month period, we delivered a comprehensive training programme using a mix of online and face-to-face sessions. Training was conducted at their headquarters in South Shields and via Teams, ensuring full participation across all levels of the organisation.

From board members and senior management to frontline staff, including electricians, roofers, and painters, every employee took part in the sessions. The training covered key aspects of disability awareness, equality, and etiquette, equipping staff with the knowledge and confidence to support disabled residents effectively.

The Impact

The training was well received, with staff gaining a deeper understanding of disability inclusion. One participant shared their feedback:

“The training has made me think differently about disabled people.”

This initiative has helped South Tyneside Council Housing Service foster a more inclusive culture and improve its engagement with disabled residents.
