Promoting accessibility and inclusion on the ITV News Instagram page
I wanted to reach out to you regarding posts, reels and stories on your ITV Instagram pages (example ITVnews, ITVpolitics, ITVtynetees).
These pages continue to share videos, posts, and reels with no captioning, meaning deaf and hard of hearing audiences cannot access your news content on social media platforms.
We would like to see ITV prioritise adding captions to all its content where there is spoken word.
- Captions make videos accessible for d/Deaf people and those with hearing loss.
- Captions make videos accessible for everyone who may watch videos without sound.
- Captions ensure information can be shared, even with background noise or busy environments.
- Adding captions improves service and ensures no information is missed or misinterpreted.
- Captions are beneficial for people where English is not their first language.
Instagram offers functionality, for free, to add captions to videos, meaning this process could take no more than one or two minutes of additional time.
We hope ITV takes on board our suggestions and continues to develop and promote highly accessible and inclusive media.
